F.A. Youth Cup 1st Round

Tuesday, 1st November 2005

Rushden & Diamonds 3 Lincoln City 0
Tomlin 1
Lambley 45, 56

Lee Tomlin got Rushden & Diamonds off to a perfect start in this F.A. Youth Cup 1st Round tie by scoring inside the first 60 seconds. Tomlin, four-goal hero of the recent Midland Youth Cup victory, received the ball from the right before cutting inside to the edge of the penalty area to fire hard and low into the net. It set the tone for what was a first-class team performance with Lincoln continually struggling to cope with the vision and skill of Tomlin, and the blistering pace of Lawrence Lambley.

The visitors did however create two chances to equalise in the space of a couple of minutes. On 11 minutes, a free kick to the left of the penalty area was crossed to the far post where Daniel Hone headed wide from 6 yards. This was followed by another headed chance a minute later from Nigel Wallace that Martyn Margarson, in the Rushden goal, saved comfortably.

Rushden continued to look the more accomplished side going forward. Good work on the right by Brian Dodsworth saw his cross directed towards goal by Lambley in the 17th minute, but the effort caused no real problem for Lincoln keeper Scott Loach.

An excellent interchange of passes between Alex Bolt and Jon Stead after 20 minutes almost created an opening for the Diamonds. On the half-hour, following a throw-in on the left, Lambley showed his pace and unleashed a shot that went just wide of the target. Two minutes later and more good work by Stead led to a chance for Tomlin, but his shot cleared the crossbar.

Tomlin made an excellent turn and shot from just inside the penalty area in the 35th minute that the keeper did well to save low down. This was immediately followed by a good run on the left by Lambley who fed the ball inside for Tomlin to shoot, but the effort was deflected wide by a defender. From the resulting corner, a penalty area scramble ensued that resulted in Lambley firing in a low shot, and again keeper Loach did well to save.

A long ball played forward by the visitors was comfortably dealt with by Dominic Langdon, who was commanding in the Rushden defence all evening.

The Diamonds finally got just rewards for their efforts in the last minute of the first-half. Lambley again used his pace to outstrip the Lincoln defence as he ran onto a through ball on the left side of the penalty area to fire home confidently.

Full credit to the Lincoln players who came out in the 2nd half still showing lots of determination. However, the tie was effectively over after 56 minutes. A long ball played forward from midway inside the home teams half, caught the Lincoln defence flat-footed. Lambley again used his stunning pace to leave the defenders in his wake, proceeding to the edge of the penalty area where he unleashed an excellent shot, rocketing into the top corner of the net.

Lincoln continued to work hard, with Gary King firing over the bar just before the hour mark. Owain Warlow followed this up with a good shot that Margarson had to be alert to, turning the ball round the post for a corner.

As game progressed more chances were created. A right-foot shot from Tomlin from 25 yards out went narrowly wide of the upright. Tomlin then crossed from the left only to see Bolt’s header saved by the keeper. Lincoln then broke quickly and Tom Garrick forced a good save from Margarson. In the 70th minute, a good run from left back Ben Reynolds saw his cross touched just wide by Tomlin. A minute later another ball played over the top of the Lincoln defence saw Lambley race away again only to shoot wide of the target.

Rushden came close to making four in the 81st minute following an excellent run by Stead who saw his goal-bound effort cleared off of the line.

The crowd showed their appreciation of Lambley’s display by warmly applauding him off of the pitch when substituted in the eighty-second minute.
